It’s no secret that red was deemed fall 2023’s color of the season, but as winter approaches, the fashion world’s obsession with the classic hue has only grown. And with red (cherry red, especially) ranking one of the most popular colors on the runway over these past months, it’s no surprise that it’s taken over our feeds, if not our closets, too. Still, red can be a difficult color to work with, and tastefully incorporating it into your wardrobe is no small task. Read about how to seamlessly enter your Cherry Girl era:
Finding The Right Red
Let’s all be honest with each other: Cherry red is a bold and difficult shade to work with. Thankfully, it’s not the only red that’s trending, and not your only hope to achieving the coveted look. Depending on your style and skin tone, it’s important to narrow down what shades of red best suit you (yes, this rule applies to both your makeup and wardrobe). The easiest way to do this is to experiment with different reds in person. Take a trip to Sephora and swatch a few red lips, or ransack your best friends’ closets and try on their red pieces. Make a day of it.

A quicker but less direct alternative to this would be taking an online quiz or completing a digital color analysis. We all remember when everyone and their mother were obsessed with TikTok’s color analysis filter (guilty)- don’t be afraid to take your best shades to heart.
Regardless of what approach you take, make sure you know your undertones. If you have warmer undertones, regardless of your skin tone, opt for warmer reds. Cool undertones? Cool reds.
Statement Staples
Once you’ve narrowed down what reds work best for you, it’s time to incorporate them into your looks. One of the biggest trends I’ve noticed when it comes to red is that less is more: a pop of red is easier to manage than a head-to-toe look. Gucci’s Spring 2024 Ready-To-Wear served as the perfect inspiration, featuring pops of red in nearly all 55 looks. The Patent Leather Jackie Bag was a favorite of mine, as well as a few to-die-for cherry slingbacks.

And, of course, we all know and love Repetto’s iconic Camille and Cendrillon Ballerinas in Pommard Red. After ballet flats made a comeback this summer, you can’t go wrong doubling down on the trends.
But in case you’re not looking to overspend this season, countless labels have brought red to the table. Wherever you search, you’re almost guaranteed to find the perfect piece to add to- or begin- your collection.
All in the Details
If you’re nervous to commit to a red-ridden wardrobe, or just want to keep it more subtle, there are plenty of ways to add some crimson to your look without feeling overwhelmed. A bold red lip on a night out is a great way to experiment with the shade, or if you want a richer, moodier look, go for a merlot or maroon (Glossier’s current Cranberry Lip Trio is a perfect purchase if that’s more your taste).

Or, a favorite of mine, try TikTok’s “Cherry Mocha” and “Boston University Red” nails. My personal favorite polishes are by Olive and June- I’d recommend shades “Brick” and “Obsessed.”
So, there you have your ultimate guide to owning the color red this season. And whether you keep it casual or go full out, remember the most cliché piece of advice we could possibly offer: wear it with confidence.
