From the eclectic street styles of Spain and Copenhagen to the chic sophistication of Paris and Milan, we can all agree on one thing: Europe does it best in the fashion world. Whether you are jet-setting off to Europe this summer, or soaking up the sun at home, you can enjoy an Aperol spritz and embrace the aesthetic of European summer from anywhere. Grab your suitcase and take some notes—here are the emerging summer trends from fashion’s favorite destinations, complete with styling tips from yours truly.
Bigger and Better Sunglasses
Don’t worry, your ''90s-inspired oval sunnies are still very much in style. However, this summer in Europe, we’re seeing a shift towards bigger and more square-shaped sunglasses, especially the iconic Rayban Wayfarers. These shades have been around since the ‘50s, resurging in the 80s, and then again in the 2010s. No sunglasses are as timeless. They add a cool-girl allure to every outfit and make you look effortlessly chic. Get your hands on a pair now—they’ll become a staple this fall and winter.
Styling Tip: From exploring the streets of Paris to tanning at Lake Como, these sunglasses are perfect for any destination. Pair with a white linen button-down and bikini for an elevated beach look this summer.

Butter Yellow
Great on toast, even better in your wardrobe. The European summer color palate typically includes the standard neutrals: white, black, grey, and tan. However this season, a new color has entered the chat: butter yellow. When throwing an array of neutrals into your cart as you shop for this summer, don’t skip out on the color of the season.
Styling Tip: Incorporate butter yellow through accessories like dainty heels and bags or closet staples like cashmere sweaters and linen pants. Just think about how cute you’ll look matching the Limoncello you're sipping on in Italy.

Oversized Scrunchies
Worn by fashion-forward locals across Europe, these extra-large scrunchies are perfect for adding flair to your outfit and (let’s be real,) a practical solution for keeping your hair off your sweaty neck in the European heat. As the fashion scene welcomes a wave of hair accessories, these super-sized scrunchies are dominating the streets this summer. Choose from white eyelet, gingham, pastel, leopard print—or really any color or pattern your heart desires. You won't regret packing one of these scrunchies.
Styling Tip: Ideal for Spain, Copenhagen, and Portugal, or simply looking ultra cute lounging around your home—your cat will be impressed by your impeccable style. Shop at Good Squish, a London-based brand that hand stitches each scrunchie with deadstock fabrics.

Scarves
As seen worn by Hailey Bieber over baseball caps, and Hunter Schafer at Cannes, the head scarf trend is here to stay, and there is no better place to rock this look than in Europe. Beyond its stylish appeal, this trend provides a solution to the bad hair days that come along with summer. No more windblown hair from driving with your windows down, or sandy, tangled beach hair—just throw on your scarf and hide it all away. Whether you prefer florals, bold prints, or neutrals, this versatile accessory works in all colors and patterns.
Styling Tip: If you are worried about looking like E.T., don't fret. There are endless ways to style these silk scarves beyond wrapping one around your head. Tie it around your neck for a chic and sophisticated look, attach it to your favorite purse for a subtle pop of print, or wear it as a tube top with a bikini—the options are endless.

All Things Striped
To fully embrace European summer there’s a wardrobe essential you can’t miss: stripes. Reviewing my notes from the fashion I saw across Europe, one thing stood out—stripes, stripes, and more stripes. While stripes for summer may not be groundbreaking, this trend goes beyond the classic white and blue striped button-down. Summer 2024 is about stripes in vibrant hues and wearing them from head to toe. From dresses, bikinis, cardigans, trousers, linens, boxer shorts, and tee shirts—we are seeing it all.
Styling Tip:
Don’t be scared of mixing stripes in unconventional ways, or of matching with a beach umbrella. Shop for your stripes anywhere, but no one does them quite like J Crew. Shop their St. Tropez collection here.

Linen Shorts
Denim shorts will always be a summer staple, don’t get me wrong, but for your European summer trip opt for more tailored styles. Linen and boxer-style shorts have been huge this spring and summer. These styles are easier to throw on and much breezier than denim for the blazing heat in the later months of summer.
Style Tip: Pair linen shorts with a matching top or button-down and layered necklaces. You’ll not only look stylish but also gracefully avoid a heat-induced meltdown. If you're still set on denim, look for pairs with a linen blend for better breathability.

Fringe
From the S/S 24 catwalks to the European streets, fringe is making a statement this summer. Both fun to wear, and impeccably stylish, you can wear fringe in the form of beach over-ups or daring party gowns. This trend is set to grow in popularity and transition into fall.
Styling Tip: Wear a colorful dress adorned with fringe detailing at the bottom hem for dancing til sunrise in Ibiza, or go for a more understated take with a fringed bag.
