Six of the Most Celebrated Looks from 2023's Festival de Cannes

Every year, for twelve days in May, the world gathers in the south of France to celebrate what we know as the annual Festival de Cannes (Cannes Film Festival), an international film festival put on to celebrate and premiere various films from across the globe. Founded in September 1946, the spectacular event offers a wide variety of awards, but it's not quite like the Oscars. Instead, anyone can submit a film to Cannes, and every submission has the chance to be viewed by representatives of the international movie industry.

Film aside, however, the Festival de Cannes makes for a spectacular show of high fashion and haute couture. Let's talk about our favorite looks this year:

Natalie Portman

One of the most praised looks by far this year came from none other than Natalie Portman. Dressed in Dior haute couture reminiscent of the Junon dress that Christian Dior himself created for his 1949-1950 autumn/winter collection, Portman's look stole the hearts of millions. British Vogue even took the initiative of naming it "one of the most famous Dior gowns of all time."

The dress has been referenced on numerous occasions in the past, but as a longtime ambassador for Dior, Natalie might just have done it best.

Dua Lipa

Dua Lipa sparked quite the conversation on the carpet this year when she announced her new boyfriend, Romain Gavras, but it was her look that really stole the show. Dripping in Tiffany & Co. jewels and dressed in Celine, Dua first walked at the King of Algiers premiere. However, she is rumored to make further appearances for her work on the Barbie soundtrack.

The asymmetric neckline and cut-out bodice were comparable to Mugler's Spring 2020 RTW collection, though her elegant and cunning accessories made the look entirely its own.

Elsa Hosk

Viktor and Rolf offered us one of SS23's most memorable haute couture collections a few months ago, and who better to bring us back to their show than Elsa Hosk? The Scandinavian supermodel donned a baby blue piece straight from the runway, completed with a dusty rose corset.

Rolf Snoeren described the iconic silhouette as "an absurd take on the stereotype of a couture ballgown," and Hosk's editorial-style posing on the carpet elegantly yet cunningly displayed those themes.

Lily-Rose Depp

Lily-Rose Depp was one of the internet's first "it girls," and despite being a famously called nepo baby, she's one of the most prominent rising actresses of her generation. It was her recent work in HBO (now MAX) 's upcoming series The Idol that brought her to Cannes this year, donned in none other than vintage Chanel.

She attended alongside Abel Makkonen Tesfaye (The Weeknd) and series creator Sam Levinson in a classic LBD, black tights, and matching sheer gloves.

Karlie Kloss

Top model Karlie Kloss stole the MET Gala this early May when she took the opportunity to announce her pregnancy with her second baby. She attended Cannes, however, in Dior as opposed to Loewe.

Kloss first hit the carpet at the Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny premiere in a dandelion-yellow gown with a matching veiled headband. The look was compared to the Greek goddess Hera thanks to its Grecian-style silhouette and gentle movement across the carpet.

Jennifer Lawrence

Natalie Portman wasn't the only star to turn heads in Dior this week. In fact, Jennifer Lawerence may just have made more headlines when she attended the premiere of "Anatomy of a Fall" in a stunning bespoke couture ball gown featuring a wrap-around shawl and pleated neckline. The crimson color is rumored to be an ode to her work in The Hunger Games, especially given the upcoming release of the prequel adaptation, A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Lawrence paired the gown with a statement Dior necklace and diamond ring.

It should be noted, however, that the Festival De Cannes is said to have a strict no flats policy, and the award-winning actress wasn't shy to break it. Lawrence paired her initial look with a pair of black flip-flops, and didn't change until the premiere of a documentary she produced called "Bread and Roses," which follows the lives of women living in Afghanistan after the Taliban's resurgence. The press took to her bold move quickly following comments made by Thierry Fremaux and Emily Blunt regarding unnecessary dress codes and double standards for women in fashion and media.
