Finding your colors no longer costs an arm and a leg to do. Before the last few years, it used to cost over $500 to get a professionally done color analysis. A stylist would come to your home and bring boundless swatches and carefully curate the colors that flatter you. As the fashion world has evolved, it is becoming easier and easier to become your own stylist. But before we begin, let’s break down what exactly is a color analysis.
The Basics
A color analysis is “a process that helps people find colors that complement them — everything from clothes and makeup to hair and jewelry. There are 16 different color palettes that each person can identify with, but people tend to lean toward the seasonal ones: winter, spring, summer, and fall.” according to TODAY. It is actually incredibly easy to designate yourself into one of those four seasons. It just takes a little patience and a mirror.

The number one most important thing in finding the colors that work best for you is determining your undertone. Everyone is generally either warm toned, cool toned, or neutral. Warm toned people are normally described as a peaches and cream complexion, or naturally have more pink or red to their skin. Cool toned people often have more of a blueish hue to their complexion, and neutral toned people are just that: neutral. If, just by face value, you can’t tell what you are, take a quick peak at your veins. People with more warm toned undertones are more likely to have veins that appear green whereas if you were cool toned, they would come across as more blue.
Once you have determined what your undertone is, look at yourself and try to decide whether you have deep or light features and coloring. Deep features are often categorized as strong, dark eyebrows and eyes, whereas light features are the opposite. The next crucial step after all of this putting it into action. Go to your wardrobe and grab a few different pieces in a few different shades and colors. Now it is time for the true test. Hold the pieces up to your face and see which enhances your features the most. Just because one shade of color looks good on you doesn’t mean that the color in different tones will.

A key thing to look for is the way your skin, eyes, and lips light up. If you have a hard time deciphering which colors enhance you the most, go to websites like Prettyyourworld.com and Business Insider to follow their step-by-step guides on what to look for as you walk yourself through this process. For people who are a light spring, pastels, warm tones, and gold jewelry accentuate the aforementioned features the most. In contrast, people who are deep winters look best in cooler, richer, and darker toned clothes with silver jewelry. All seasons can wear the same colors, but it’s knowing the undertone and shades that will fit you best that is important.
Now That You're Set
Knowing your colors may be one of the most crucial aspects of developing a good style. Now that you can decipher for yourself at home, it allows you to take your outfits to the next level. After finding your “season”, take yourself out on a little date and buy yourself some new pieces that will make you light up brighter than a new Dior design. Finding your colors can feel like a daunting task, but we know you can do it and know that you will create the most fabulous outfits in the process.
