This Season’s Style Forecast: What’s Trending this Spring

The fashion industry is always changing and evolving, and as we shift from trend to trend between months- sometimes even weeks- it’s no doubt that keeping up with the season’s latest can get overwhelming. Thankfully, in a world where varying social media influencers and fashion enthusiasts have dominated the style scene, it’s been made much more possible to predict what’s coming next.

Take a look at what style trends have been brewing behind the scenes this spring, and find out which ones might be worth investing in as the season carries on:

Maxi-Length Skirts and Dresses

Mini skirts- the size of a belt, according to Paris Hilton’s standards- have given us a run for our money over the past months, having seen a massive increase in popularity when Y2K fashion made a comeback in 2022. But now, it’s safe to say that their time to shine has come to an end (sorry, Paris), and maxi length skirts and dresses are in.

Don’t be fooled, though. Long doesn’t have to mean boring, and the internet’s favorite fashion lovers are here to prove it. From textile pairings like denim and leather to color combos that defy the laws of practical fashion, we’ve seen maxi-length pieces become a groundbreaking way to elevate any outfit. But that’s not to say that classy is out. Take a look at model Christina Nadin draped in an elegant maxi dress while off-duty this January:

All kinds of celebrities have been seen sporting ankle-length styles recently, bringing more attention to the trend- no matter how eccentric or elegant- as the winter season begs to come to and end.

Statement Shoes

Everyone loves a simple, classy shoe- whether that be a pair of shiny stilettos to compliment your favorite little black dress, or a timeless white sneaker for any occasion- but this year, it looks like it’s going to be time to say goodbye to the majority of minimalist footwear when it comes to constructing everyday looks.

Dozens of style icons across the globe have been ditching practicality recently, shifting from plain white tennis shoes and suede mini UGGs to maximalist pumps and colorful sports shoes.

One eye-catching shoe in particular that’s seen a major comeback this year is is Adidas’ OG Samba, now high in demand in multiple colors and styles.

The Sambas have become a favorite of hundreds of celebrities and streetwear icons over the years, and are now seeing the peak of their comeback. Today, the iconic shoes sell at retail for an average of $100 a pair, but you’d be lucky to find them in stock, let alone soon.

Distressed Knitwear

It’s no doubt that mohair is in, perhaps thanks to the rise of “balletcore” starting in late 2022, but the look hasn’t stopped at shrugs, leg warmers, and boleros. Barely-there sweaters and knits can be spotted in just about every fashion enthusiast’s closet, now. And as spring rolls in, designers and influencers have made it clear that the look isn’t just for the cold.

From the streets of Copenhagen to the beaches of LA, knitwear has become a versatile wardrobe staple over the weeks, but due to its impracticality, there’s no telling how long it will last.

Larger Than Life Bags and Totes

Over the past months, we’ve seen a pretty distinct migration from Y2K’s favorite mini purses to a more practical take on accessories with bags and totes that could carry a lot more than just an outfit. More importantly, most of these bags are designed and worn to make a statement, and can say a lot about the person carrying them, giving anyone the perfect opportunity to look good, feel great, and keep everything they need on-hand.

A current favorite among many names in fashion is Maison Goyard’s Saint Louis GM tote (pictured above), as seen in the hands of countless celebs including the Duchess of Sussex herself, Meghan Markle. But there’s one thing that all of the Saint Louis bags- which come in a variety of colors and sizes- have in common: they’re meant to be used. Like Jane Birkin wears her famously distressed Hermès Birkin bag, most who have donned the Saint Louis aren’t afraid to use it- whether that means doubling the tote as a grocery bag or even a pillow.

Regardless of brand names or price tags, however, oversized bags of all kinds have been warmly welcomed into 2023, and to the relief of many, are likely here to stay awhile.

What to Expect

Do note: the best way to embrace trends is to incorporate them into a unique and personal style of your own. By styling pieces that curate more to you, you allow for a closet that screams “I know what I’m doing, and I know who I am.” Of course, there are plenty more styles and trends weaving their way into the current fashion scene, and many more to come as the months pass, especially considering the peak of the FW23 season approaching. But until the snow dies down, we’ve got a lot to work with.
